Transport Secretary plans swift nationalisation for failing rail company Avanti

Abysmal service prompts action

Failing rail company Avanti is being lined up for a swift nationalisation as Transport Secretary Louise Haigh is fed up with its abysmal service and endless disruptions for passengers.

Legal action in the works

Louise Haigh is seeking legal advice to find breaches in Avanti's contract that will allow for its nationalisation and bring it back into public hands.

Performance talks with Avanti

Ms. Haigh recently met with the firm's boss, making it clear that the current performance levels on the West Coast main line are unacceptable.

Labour's nationalisation plans

Under Labour's announced plans, all rail operators will eventually be nationalised as their contracts expire. Govia Thameslink Railway and Chiltern are expected to be the first to go in April next year.

Avanti's current status

Despite having a ten-year contract, Avanti's nationalisation may happen sooner due to its poor performance, ranking as the third worst operator in Britain for reliability.
