Labour Candidate Wins Controversial Election
The election of Alistair Strathern, dubbed an "eco zombie" by critics, to the Mid Bedfordshire seat has drawn criticism from the Tories. The 33-year-old Labour candidate, who previously posed as a zombie during a Greenpeace protest, won the seat with a majority of just over 1,000 votes.
Controversial Protest
Strathern made headlines last year when he participated in a zombie-themed protest outside the Home Office. Images from the protest show him dressed as a ghoul, with face paint and blood dripping from his mouth. The protest was against new laws that restrict extreme protests by environmental activist groups.
Targeted in the Future
Despite his election victory, Strathern may face challenges in the future. One Tory MP commented, "He may have got in this time but with a majority just over 1,000 we will target him next time. A large proportion of voters don’t like the tactics of climate groups such as Greenpeace."
Background and Support
Strathern, an Oxford University graduate, previously worked for the Bank of England, advising them on climate matters. Despite calls to drop him as a candidate, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer decided to stand by Strathern.
