Verdict Expected Next Week
The Supreme Court will announce its verdict on the government's controversial plan to deport migrants to Rwanda next week. The judgement will be delivered on Wednesday shortly after 10am, determining the fate of the £140 million scheme.
Challenging an Unlawful Decision
The government's appeal comes after the Court of Appeal ruled the deportation policy unlawful. The Supreme Court's ruling will have significant implications for the enforcement of the plan.
No Deportation Flights Yet
Despite the signing of the deal in April 2022, no deportation flights have taken off. Home Secretary Suella Braverman has stated that it is currently impossible to provide a timeline for the flights until the court decision is made.
Tackling Illegal Migration
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has made addressing illegal migration one of his top priorities. He aims to "stop the boats" and reduce the number of asylum seekers coming to the UK. Although there has been a decrease of around a fifth, the number still remains at almost 26,700 migrants.
Legal Arguments
During the hearing, the Home Office argued that the policy to remove people to a country that is less attractive than the UK but still safe is lawful. However, lawyers representing several asylum seekers described the country's asylum system as "woefully deficient" and highlighted issues of unfairness and arbitrariness.
