Supreme Court Ruling: Rwandan Government Slams Insulting Judgement

UNHCR Accused of Misleading Evidence

The recent ruling by the Supreme Court on the Migration and Economic Development Partnership has sparked outrage in Rwanda. The government argues that the judgement was highly political and insulting to the country. They claim that the judges based their decision on inaccurate evidence submitted by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

UNHCR Collaboration with Rwanda Contradicts Ruling

Despite the ruling, Rwanda continues to collaborate with the UNHCR to evacuate asylum seekers from dangerous situations in Libya. In fact, a flight carrying 169 new arrivals landed in Kigali the day after the judgement. This is in addition to the more than 1700 others who have been relocated from Libya, along with the 130,000 refugees currently being cared for in Rwanda. The UNHCR has even commended Rwanda's treatment of refugees and asylum seekers as 'exemplary'.

Claims of Hypocrisy and False Accusations

Rwandan officials argue that campaigners have demonized the country due to their disagreement with its policies. They believe that it is unfair to attack Rwanda for its efforts in caring for asylum seekers and migrants, as well as addressing the global imbalance in opportunity. They claim that the allegations against Rwanda, including a supposed 100% rejection rate of asylum seekers, are false and misleading. Only two individuals from Syria and Yemen were not considered for asylum due to a quicker path to legal residence, and they are currently living and working in Rwanda with their families.

Rwanda's Motives and Vision for the Future

Rwanda's government clarifies that their actions are driven by a desire to offer migrants a home in Africa and provide them with better prospects. They believe that by investing in economic development, they can unlock the potential of the continent and its people, ultimately reducing the need for dangerous journeys to Europe. They emphasize that economic migration cannot be solved without creating more opportunities and hope globally.

Call for Fair Criticism

The Rwandan government acknowledges that criticism of the Migration and Economic Development Partnership is valid, but they urge critics not to attack Rwanda or resort to lies. They assert that as a country offering safety, opportunity, and a home to those most in need, Rwanda deserves better.
