The Background
Suella Braverman, the former Home Secretary, is set to unleash a scathing attack on Rishi Sunak's migration record in the House of Commons today. This comes as tensions rise over illegal immigration and the government's proposed Rwanda legislation.
Braverman's Demand
Braverman is expected to demand that Sunak disapply Strasbourg edicts from asylum policy, effectively challenging European judges. This is seen as a direct challenge to Sunak's authority after their fallout over a deal to reduce net migration.
The Controversial Treaty
Meanwhile, Home Secretary James Cleverly is in Rwanda to finalize a new treaty aimed at addressing concerns raised by the Supreme Court. The treaty grants residency to almost all small boat migrants, even if their asylum claims fail. However, Rwanda will have the power to veto certain asylum seekers, and Britain will also take in a portion of the country's refugees. Taxpayers will be responsible for additional funding beyond the £140 million already allocated for the agreement.
Emergency Legislation and the "Safe Country" Designation
The Prime Minister is currently working with lawyers on emergency legislation that will designate Rwanda as a "safe country." This move aims to bypass challenges under the European Convention on Human Rights and the Human Rights Act that could potentially halt deportation flights. While the final plan has not been agreed upon, insiders assure that it will be robust enough to overcome both domestic and international challenges.
Opposition and Scrutiny
However, there is opposition to overriding the European Convention on Human Rights, with One Nation Tory MPs labeling it a "red line." Chairman Damian Green has urged the government to carefully consider the long-term implications and not rush into difficult decisions. Additionally, right-wing Tory MPs are demanding sufficient time to scrutinize the proposed legislation, cautioning against attempts to push it through without proper debate.
