Small boat migrants face MRI scans to stop men posing as children sneaking into Britain

New measures have been introduced to address the issue of illegal migration via small boats, allowing the use of scientific age assessments in order to prevent adults from falsely claiming to be minors. These assessments may involve MRIs of knees and collar bones, as well as X-rays of teeth, hands, and wrists.

Home Secretary to hold power over detention periods

Under the new measures, the Home Secretary will have the authority to determine the length of time individuals can be detained before deportation, rather than the courts. This change aims to expedite the deportation process.

Lack of identification and failure to hand over phones may impact claims

In an effort to tackle illegal migration more effectively, individuals who fail to produce identification or refuse to hand over their phones could face negative consequences on the assessment of their claims.

Public ratings for immigration handling at all-time low

Public confidence in the UK's immigration policy has reached its lowest point since the Brexit vote, according to a recent Ipsos and British Future poll. Only one in ten respondents expressed satisfaction with the current policy, with critics arguing that it is neither humane nor successful in achieving its objectives.

British Future director Sunder Katwala commented: "The Government's approach to immigration is disappointing everyone. Liberals perceive it as inhumane, while hardliners believe it is failing to deliver on its promises."

Recent arrivals via small boats

Last week, an additional 2,000 individuals arrived in the UK via small boats, with 45 migrants being brought ashore at Dover just yesterday.
