Sir Keir Starmer Calls for New EU Security Deal to Combat Channel People Smugglers

Sir Keir Starmer's Proposal

Sir Keir Starmer is pushing for a new security deal with the EU to aid in the capture of Channel people smugglers. He criticized the current post-Brexit agreement, highlighting the lack of access to European intelligence on these criminal groups.

International Cooperation

Speaking at the Interpol general assembly in Glasgow, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for UK investigators to lead efforts in tackling smuggling gangs across Europe. He stressed the importance of greater international cooperation and intelligence sharing to combat people-smuggling, likening it to a global security threat on par with terrorism.

Collaboration with Other Countries

The UK is also collaborating with Italy to disrupt the supply chains of maritime equipment, counter illicit financial activities, and enhance investigative capabilities and data sharing. Additionally, a "bi-lateral cooperation treaty" is being developed with Germany to further strengthen efforts against people smuggling.

Impact of Labour's Actions

Since Labour took office, approximately 9,400 individuals have been repatriated to their home countries, with a focus on returning individuals to places considered safe.
