Sir Gavin Williamson ordered to apologize for 'bullying' former chief whip Wendy Morton over Queen's funeral tickets

Former cabinet minister Sir Gavin Williamson has been found guilty of bullying former chief whip Wendy Morton by Parliament's sleaze watchdog. The Independent Expert Panel (IEP) has recommended that Sir Gavin apologize to MPs in the Commons chamber and undergo training to change his behavior.

Intimidating text messages

Sir Gavin, who was previously a key figure in whipping MPs to support Rishi Sunak's attempts to become Prime Minister, sent intimidating text messages to Wendy Morton after missing out on tickets to the Queen's funeral. He claimed that he was not given the tickets because he did not support Liz Truss in the recent Tory leadership election.

In one of the messages, Sir Gavin told Ms Morton: "Well let's see how many more times you f*** us all over. There is a price for everything." The panel described these messages as "both rude and aggressive."

Resignation and a history of complaints

Sir Gavin was forced to resign from Rishi Sunak's cabinet in November last year due to a number of bullying complaints. Known as the "master of the dark arts," he played a key role in whipping MPs to support Mr. Sunak's leadership bids. However, he resigned just hours after Downing Street distanced itself from him, stating that the Prime Minister would not wait for the outcome of ongoing investigations into his behavior.

The Commons standards chief has concluded that Sir Gavin's messages to Wendy Morton were offensive and intimidating, meeting the criteria for bullying. Now, Sir Gavin has been instructed to apologize to MPs and undergo training to change his behavior.
