Alarming Statistics

An average of 74 attacks occur in prisons every day, according to shocking figures revealed recently. In 2023 alone, there were 26,912 attacks, marking a significant 28% increase in just one year.

Serious Incidents

Out of the total attacks, 3,205 were classified as serious, with prison staff facing the brunt of the violence. In the same year, there were 9,204 assaults on prison staff, including 825 serious incidents, showing a 27% rise from the previous year.

Most Violent Prison

Wandsworth in South West London topped the list as the most violent jail, recording a staggering 1,044 attacks. This data comes as the government has been releasing prisoners to alleviate overcrowding in prisons.

Call for Action

Liberal Democrat Josh Babarinde emphasized the urgent need for the government to develop a plan to enhance safety in prisons. The Ministry of Justice acknowledged the challenges, stating that all assaults in prison are treated with extreme seriousness.
