Schools face ban on socially transitioning kids under new proposed law

Former Prime Minister Liz Truss introduces Bill to make it illegal for teachers to use a child's preferred pronouns

Schools would be banned from "socially transitioning" kids under a new law proposed by Liz Truss. The former Prime Minister will introduce a Bill in the Commons today making it illegal for teachers to use a child's preferred pronouns.

Proposed law also seeks to restrict access to puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones

The proposed law, which doesn't currently have government backing, would also make it illegal to give puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to under-18s. This comes as the long-awaited trans guidance for schools is expected to be published by the Department for Education next week.

Clarifying the definition of a woman

Ms Truss also wants to change the law to clarify that anyone legally defined as a woman cannot have a penis. Her Bill is so far being backed by 11 Tory MPs, including ex-Home Secretary Priti Patel.

Ms Truss said: "It has become clear that the law as it stands is not providing sufficient protection for young people or indeed adult women. Getting this law onto the Statute Book would not only safeguard the rights of women and protect the wellbeing of our children, but it would also be a significant victory for common sense."
