Russia to Unleash Decade of Aggression Against the West, Warns New Defence Secretary

Top Priority: Stopping the War in Ukraine

Newly appointed Defence Secretary, John Healey, has issued a stark warning that Russia, under the leadership of Vladimir Putin, is set to unleash a decade of aggression against Western nations. He emphasized that stopping the war in Ukraine should be the top priority for the Government in order to counter this anticipated hostility.

Call for Increased Defence Spending

During the Nato summit, Healey's warning was echoed by Sir Keir Starmer, who urged Nato allies to allocate 2.5 per cent of their GDP towards defence spending. While the Prime Minister emphasized the urgency of this call, no clear timeline was provided for reaching this target.

Support for Ukraine and Military Aid

Healey stressed the importance of supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, stating that aiding Ukraine's ability to defend itself is the primary focus. The UK, along with 11 other countries, has committed to sending a million drones to Ukraine. Additionally, Sir Keir announced a £3 billion annual military aid package for Kyiv until 2031.

Strategic Defence Review and Security Partnerships

In response to the Ukraine invasion and emerging threats from China and Iran, the Prime Minister will launch a strategic defence review next week to evaluate the UK's military capabilities. Sir Keir emphasized the need for a united and resilient approach towards China within Nato.

Furthermore, discussions on strengthening security ties with Europe will take place at a summit hosted by Sir Keir at Blenheim Palace. While emphasizing the importance of collaboration with EU partners on defence cooperation, Healey reassured that this would not lead to the UK joining a European defence force.

Although talks on a formal UK-EU security pact are not expected to begin until the end of the year, the UK remains committed to enhancing security cooperation with European allies.
