The European Political Community was spearheaded by French President Emmanuel Macron, with the UK scheduled to host the group next year.

It consists of the EU plus dozens of other European countries including the UK.

At the summit the PM will stress the need to work “closely together” to stem illegal migration in the Channel and beyond.

He will tell fellow leaders: “We cannot address these problems without Europe’s governments and institutions working closely together.

“In every meeting, every summit, every international gathering like this, the security of our borders must be top of the agenda.

“The UK will be at the heart of this international effort to stop the boats and defend our national security.”
