Quick Reshuffle
Rishi Sunak is set to replace Ben Wallace as Defence Secretary in a mini-reshuffle today. Wallace, who is stepping down and quitting Parliament, will be replaced by Sunak as part of the Prime Minister's limited rejig of his top team.
Imminent Announcement
Senior government sources have confirmed that ministers are on standby for the imminent announcement. Wallace has submitted a list of preferred candidates to the Prime Minister, who has remained tight-lipped about his new appointment.
Shocking Resignation
Ben Wallace shocked many last month when he announced his resignation. Despite being the most popular Cabinet minister among the grassroots and once the favourite to become Prime Minister, Wallace is leaving the post after four years in the top job.
Possible Replacements
Several names have been floated as potential replacements for Wallace. These include Treasury minister John Glen, who is seen as a loyalist to Sunak, Cabinet Office minister Jeremy Quinn, and Armed Forces minister James Heappey. Energy Secretary Grant Shapps and former minister Liam Fox are also being tipped for the position.
Future Reshuffle
It is expected that Rishi Sunak will save a wider reshuffle of his top team for after the party conference season and the King's Speech in November, closer to the next election. Home Secretary Suella Braverman is expected to remain in her post, although some Tory MPs have cooled on her.
Unnamed Sources
One ex-Minister has suggested that Suella Braverman should be replaced, saying, "You have to get rid of Suella. She seems too interested in picking fights than solving problems like small boats." Other Cabinet ministers, including Environment Secretary Therese Coffey, are also tipped for potential reshuffling.
No. 10 declined to comment on the timing of the upcoming reshuffle.
