Report warns UK boys turning to AI chatbots for girlfriends as they struggle to find jobs

Boys left behind in school and shut out of work

A recent report has highlighted the struggles faced by young men in the UK, with many being left behind in school and shut out of the workforce. The study, known as the "Lost Boys" report, reveals that young men are losing out in various aspects of life as industries traditionally dominated by males collapse and male role models become scarce.

Rise in unemployment among young men

The report indicates that there has been a significant increase in the number of young men who are out of work or training, with 550,000 currently in this position – a rise of 150,000 since the onset of the pandemic. In contrast, the number of women facing unemployment or lack of training has remained relatively stable.

Impact of absent male role models

According to the study, 2.5 million children are growing up without a father figure, which has been linked to higher crime rates and poor mental health outcomes. The absence of male role models has led many young men to seek companionship and emotional support from AI chatbots.

Prevalence of AI chatbot usage

The report highlights that nearly nine out of ten young men have used AI chatbots in the past year, a significantly higher proportion compared to young women. However, one teenager shared that while AI chatbots can simulate relationships, they often make hurtful comments that impact mental well-being, despite being aware of their artificial nature.

Call to address educational biases

During the launch of the report by the Centre for Social Justice, Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham criticized the prevailing "snobbery in education," which tends to prioritize the university path over other forms of education and training. Burnham emphasized the need to address outdated perceptions that may contribute to young men feeling marginalized and disconnected from opportunities.

The report sheds light on the challenges faced by young men in the UK and calls for greater support and resources to help address the disparities they are experiencing in education and the workforce.
