Party Chairman Richard Holden Urges Caution
Rebel Tory MPs have been warned that it would be "insanity" to try and topple Chancellor Rishi Sunak over his plan to deport migrants to Rwanda. The warning comes amid fears that a revolt could result in the third Prime Minister in just over a year. Speculation has been swirling in Westminster that some Tories have submitted letters of no confidence in Sunak, but it is believed to be far from the 53 required to trigger a leadership contest.
PM Urges MPs to Support Rwanda Plan
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has urged MPs to back his plan to deport migrants to Rwanda, despite the controversy surrounding it. Johnson stated that he is determined to see the plan through, but stopped short of declaring a Commons vote on the issue as a confidence matter. A vote on the principle of the Safety of Rwanda Bill is expected to pass next week, with a final vote and potential concessions next year.
Sunak Fights to Reassert Authority
Chancellor Rishi Sunak is fighting to regain his authority after his immigration minister, Robert Jenrick, quit over concerns that the proposed law was too weak. Sunak has insisted that the new Bill addresses all previous reasons for halting deportations to Rwanda and has warned European judges against interfering with the flights. Downing Street is waiting for the opinions of two influential backbench factions, the Brexiteer MPs and the One Nation centrists, before determining the fate of the Rwanda plan.
