Internal Home Office data reveals a surge in deportations
The number of small boat migrants deported from Britain has seen a significant increase this year, according to internal Home Office statistics. In the first six months of 2023, a total of 628 crossers were deported, compared to just 382 for the entire year of 2022. This marks a substantial rise in the efforts to remove individuals who entered the country illegally via small boats.
Albanians make up the majority of deportations
Out of the 628 deportations, more than 500 individuals were Albanians. The British government recently signed a deal with Albania to expedite the process of returning Albanian migrants. The agreement has resulted in a significant increase in the number of Albanians being deported from the UK. In 2022, only 215 Albanians were deported, highlighting the substantial growth in removals this year.
Other nationalities also face deportation
In addition to Albanians, the Home Office data reveals that individuals from other countries have also been deported. The period saw 45 Iraqis, 17 Iranians, and individuals from 54 other nationalities being removed after illegally entering the UK. The increase in deportations reflects the government's ongoing efforts to address illegal immigration through small boats.
Comparison to previous years
The surge in deportations this year starkly contrasts with previous years. In 2021, only 28 small-boat migrants of any nationality were removed from Britain. The significant increase in deportations in 2023 demonstrates the government's commitment to tackling illegal immigration and ensuring the integrity of the country's borders.
