Labour's Vaping Crackdown Could Backfire Into More Smoking, Warns Government Impact Assessment

Unintended Consequences

LABOUR's proposed clampdown on vaping could have unintended consequences, with a government impact assessment warning that it might lead to more people turning to smoking. The ban on disposable e-cigs and certain flavors could inadvertently encourage smokers, the assessment reveals.

Impact on Sales

The assessment highlights a study from the US, indicating that for every 0.7mL vape pod not sold, an additional 15 cigarettes could be purchased. This raises concerns about the potential impact of restricting vaping products.

New Legislation

New laws set to be introduced will ban throwaway vapes from June 1, alongside granting ministers powers to limit fruity flavors that attract younger consumers. Additionally, individuals born after January 2009 will be prohibited from purchasing cigarettes, and smoking will be banned in various outdoor areas.

Call for Rethink

The Institute of Economic Affairs has raised concerns about the unintended consequences of the vaping crackdown, urging the government to reconsider its approach. Shadow Health Secretary Ed Argar MP also emphasized the need for greater clarity on the potential impacts of the proposed legislation.
