Shift in UK-EU Relations
The European Union (EU) will be the Labour Party's "number-one priority" in foreign policy once in government, according to David Lammy, the Shadow Foreign Secretary. Lammy emphasized the importance of strong ties with Brussels, stating that the EU is the UK's backyard, and that the country's prosperity and security depend on good relationships with its European partners. He called for regular discussions between the UK and the EU, highlighting the need for structured dialogue to address key issues.
No Immediate Plans for Rejoining the EU
Lammy clarified that while there is a "tonal shift" in UK-EU relations under Labour, there are no immediate plans to rejoin the EU. He ruled out raising the issue in the current political cycle but suggested that a cross-party consensus might be necessary before considering reentry. Lammy acknowledged that Europe would demand such a consensus and that the UK would have to demonstrate its commitment. However, he does not foresee this happening during the next political cycle.
Tory Chairman Criticizes Labour's Priorities
Richard Holden, the Tory chairman, criticized Lammy's comments, accusing Labour of prioritizing ideology over the country. Holden claimed that for Labour, local people and the country would always be secondary to their ideological agenda. He also reminded the public of Sir Keir Starmer's support for staying in the EU during the Brexit vote and his attempts to make Jeremy Corbyn the Prime Minister.
Labour's Stance on EU Membership
Under Starmer's leadership, Labour has made it clear that it does not support rejoining the EU's single market or customs union. The party aims to avoid becoming a "rule-taker" if it comes to power. While Starmer faced criticism this week for choosing the EU anthem to represent the Labour Party, a source close to him stated that the association was coincidental and unrelated to his views on the EU.
