Shocking footage sparks outrage
Outrage has erupted over shocking footage of Labour MP Mike Amesbury appearing to punch one of his constituents. The CCTV clip shows Amesbury hitting a man up to six times while he lays on the pavement.
Response from Tory leadership hopeful
Tory leadership hopeful Robert Jenrick said Amesbury should not be an MP following the brawl. Jenrick stated, "Labour said they'd smash the gangs. It looks like they're smashing their constituents instead."
Amesbury's suspension
Hours before the brawl, Amesbury posed for snaps with the local police commissioner. Amesbury claimed he "felt threatened" before the attack at 2.15 am on Saturday in his constituency of Runcorn and Helsby, Cheshire. The MP has been suspended as a member of the Labour Party pending an investigation.
Amesbury's statement
Amesbury said, "Last night, I was involved in an incident that took place after I felt threatened on the street following an evening out with friends. I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened during this incident."
