False claims of homosexuality used to exploit the asylum system
Home Secretary Suella Braverman has accused illegal migrants of pretending to be gay in order to exploit the UK asylum system. According to Braverman, individuals crossing the English Channel in small boats are making false claims about their sexuality to receive special treatment at the border. Speaking to ITV News, she insisted that such deceptive tactics are unfair and go against the principles of a functioning asylum system.
Outdated asylum rules facilitate "shopping around" for preferred country
In Braverman's recent speech in Washington DC, she called for a reevaluation of the 1951 UN Refugee Convention, claiming that global asylum rules are outdated. She argued that the convention, although an "incredible achievement of its age," no longer reflects the current international landscape. Braverman further stated that the expansion of these rules over time has allowed illegal migrants to "shop around" for the country in which they wish to settle.
LGBT+ charities and activists express concern
The Home Secretary's comments have generated strong opposition from LGBT+ charities and activists. Elton John, in particular, expressed his concern, stating that discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals and women should be sufficient grounds for international protection. He highlighted that many nations still criminalize homosexuality or even punish it with death.
Braverman defends her position
Despite the backlash, Suella Braverman has stood by her remarks. She stressed the need for honesty in addressing the on-ground situation and defining persecution. Braverman emphasized that the UK remains committed to providing refuge for those fleeing genuine persecution but suggested that mere discrimination may not qualify for asylum protection. The Home Secretary reiterated that the focus should be on individuals who face torture and gross violations of their human rights.
