Illegal migrants in Rwanda: New law allows for detention

Rishi Sunak's 'landmark' bill signed into law

Rishi Sunak's much-anticipated plan to deport illegal migrants to Rwanda has finally been given the green light as a new law. This means that the first group of migrants earmarked for removal can now be detained.

Deportation scheme gets constitutional approval

King Charles has officially approved the deportation scheme, which was announced in the House of Lords, allowing for small boat migrants to be sent to Kigali starting from early July.

Legal challenges expected

Officials can now begin the process of detaining the initial group of migrants identified for removal, with many being housed in taxpayer-funded hotels costing around £8 million per day. However, ministers are preparing for potential legal challenges from lawyers against the deportation.

Efforts to curb Channel crossings

Mr. Sunak has outlined plans for a "regular rhythm" of removal flights throughout the summer, with an airfield secured and a chartered airline in place to transport illegal migrants to Rwanda. The move comes amidst pressure to reduce Channel crossings, which have seen a 24% increase compared to last year, with the perilous journey resulting in five migrant deaths this week alone.
