MPs call for recognition of cultural importance

MPs are advocating for pie ’n’ mash to be granted protected status to acknowledge its cultural significance to Cockneys.

Backing the campaign

MP Richard Holden is leading the charge in the Commons, urging ministers to support the recognition of pie ’n’ mash alongside other iconic British foods.

A dish steeped in history

Pie ’n’ mash, a traditional East End favorite, has been enjoyed for decades and consists of minced beef pie, mashed potato, and parsley liquor.

Preserving tradition

With only about 40 shops left, advocates argue that protecting the traditional recipe, which has been used for over 30 years, is essential to safeguarding the dish's authenticity.

Community support

Shop owner Fred Cooke, whose ancestor is credited with inventing pie ’n’ mash in 1862, is championing the cause, along with actor Danny Dyer and organizers of the Modern Cockney Festival.
