Health Secretary to Start Talks to End Junior Doctors' Strike

New Health Secretary Wes Streeting to Begin Negotiations

New Health Secretary Wes Streeting is set to start talks within days to put an end to the chaos caused by the junior doctors' strike. The British Medical Association (BMA) has been pushing for a pay rise of up to 35 per cent, a demand that the Labour Party has indicated it cannot afford to meet.

62,000 NHS Appointments Affected by Latest Strike

The most recent strike led to the cancellation of an additional 62,000 NHS appointments, bringing the total number of affected appointments to 1.5 million. Over 23,000 junior doctors participated in the five-day strike, marking the 11th time they have taken industrial action and resulting in a total of 44 workdays lost.

Call for an End to Disruptive Strikes

Saffron Cordery from NHS Providers, representing hospital managers, emphasized the need to halt these disruptive strikes. She urged the new government and unions to prioritize bringing an end to the ongoing industrial action. NHS England's chief medical officer, Prof Sir Stephen Powis, acknowledged that the true impact of the strike is likely even greater than reported.
