Disgraced MP resigns, triggering by-election
Former Tory MP Chris Pincher has formally resigned from his seat in Tamworth, sparking a second by-election for Chancellor Rishi Sunak's party. Pincher was recommended for an eight-week suspension from the Commons by parliament's sleaze watchdog in July, after he was found to have groped two men at a private members' club. Despite attempting to appeal the suspension, Pincher was unsuccessful.
"I will not stand at the next general election"
In a statement, Pincher announced his decision to step down, stating that he will not seek re-election in the next general election. He expressed a desire to consult with his office team and family following the Independent Expert Panel's decision. Pincher also emphasized his concern for his constituents, stating that he did not want to subject them to further uncertainty. He concluded his statement by paying tribute to the people of Tamworth and expressed his gratitude for representing them. Pincher will not be commenting further at this time.
