Government Faces Backlash for Refusing to Refund Victims of Miscarriages of Justice

'Outrage' Over Decision to Withhold Prison Living Costs Refund

The Government is facing criticism for its decision not to refund prison living costs charged to victims of miscarriages of justice. Despite promises from former Justice Secretary Alex Chalk to end this practice, the change will only impact new cases, leaving many wrongfully convicted individuals without reimbursement.

Victims Like Paul Blackburn Left Empty-Handed

Paul Blackburn, who spent nearly 25 years wrongfully imprisoned, will not receive any repayment for over £100,000 deducted from his compensation. Despite evidence of fabricated police evidence in his case, the government has stated that the new rules will not apply retroactively, leaving individuals like Blackburn without financial recourse.

Legal Challenge Looming

Mr. Blackburn's solicitors are considering a legal challenge against the government's decision, labeling it as "morally wrong." Labour peer Lord Falconer has also condemned the move as an "absolute outrage," calling for deductions to be repaid in all cases, regardless of whether compensation has already been settled.
