Government Extends Early Release Scheme for Prisoners

Government Extends Early Release Scheme for Prisoners

Prisoners Eligible for Early Release

Prisoners, including burglars and shoplifters, could be let out 10 weeks early as the Government extends its Early Release Scheme. The scheme aims to tackle severe overcrowding in the country's prisons.

Changes to the Scheme

Prison governors can now release "low level" offenders 70 days before the end of their sentences, up from the previous 60-day limit. The End of Custody Supervised Licence Scheme (ECSL) will implement these changes starting on May 23.

Excluded Offenders and Capacity Concerns

Serious violent offenders, terrorists, sexual offenders, and those serving life sentences are excluded from the plan. With prisons at 98.4% capacity, the government estimates that spaces will run out in June without additional releases.

Shadow Justice Secretary's Response

Shadow justice secretary, Shabana Mahmood, criticized the government for the lack of transparency regarding the early release of prisoners. She called for accountability and public scrutiny of the scheme.

Government's Response

The Ministry of Justice spokesperson emphasized the importance of keeping dangerous offenders behind bars while addressing short-term prison pressures. The government is working on expanding capacity and enhancing supervision for released offenders.
