Confession of a Love Affair
Former Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson admitted to having an affair with his aide during his time in Downing Street. His press secretary, Joe Haines, revealed that Janet Hewlett-Davies, Wilson's own deputy, was the one he was involved with romantically.
A Surprising Revelation
Despite enduring speculation throughout his life about an affair with his political secretary, Marcia Williams, Wilson's true "love match" was with Hewlett-Davies, who was significantly younger than him.
A Private Affair
The affair took place during Wilson's second term as Prime Minister from 1974 to 1976. Wilson confided in Haines that Hewlett-Davies had given him "a new lease of life." The affair remained a secret until both parties took it to the grave, with Hewlett-Davies passing away in October last year.
A Life of Service
Born in Yorkshire in 1916, Wilson had a distinguished career in politics. He served in various roles during World War II before being elected to the House of Commons in 1945. Wilson went on to become Prime Minister in 1964 and served two terms in office, from 1964 to 1970 and then from 1974 to 1976.
