Foreign students who fail to meet the requirements of their degrees in the UK may no longer be granted visas to stay in the country, according to recent proposals by the Home Office. Home Secretary James Cleverly has instructed the Migration Advisory Committee to review the pathway for nearly 100,000 students seeking employment after completing their studies.
A certain grade required to stay in the country
Chairman of the Migration Advisory Committee, Professor Brian Bell, has highlighted the lack of a formal requirement to graduate or achieve a specific grade in university courses. He suggests that such a requirement should be considered in order to determine eligibility for the graduate route. This review comes amidst confusion regarding the new £38,700 salary rule for migrants and whether it would apply to those already in the UK.
Minimal impact on net migration
While Professor Bell believes that the increased family visa threshold will have minimal impact on net migration, he anticipates that the government's recent measures could result in a substantial decrease of 300,000 annual arrivals.
