Foreign Secretary James Cleverly criticizes calls for Gaza ceasefire

Warning of Hamas manipulation and Iranian agents

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has spoken out against calls for a ceasefire in Gaza, stating that terrorist group Hamas has never shown any indication of adhering to it. Cleverly also cautioned British citizens participating in marches for a truce, highlighting the potential for certain groups to manipulate and spread disinformation. There are reports of Iranian agents attempting to exploit the Gaza protests to incite unrest in the UK.

Seeking resolution while addressing humanitarian concerns

Cleverly emphasized that calls for a ceasefire in isolation will not contribute to resolving the situation. He reiterated the UK's consistent efforts to facilitate the passage of humanitarian aid and secure the release and evacuation of British hostages in Gaza. Cleverly expressed the desire to see Israel living in safety, peace, and security. However, he noted that Hamas has not given any indication that they desire or would adhere to a ceasefire.

Israel's right to self-defense and civilian infrastructure concerns

According to Cleverly, the UK has been urging Israel to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza. However, he also pointed out that Hamas stores weapons and operates within civilian infrastructure, effectively using the population as human shields. Cleverly stated that conversations are ongoing with the Israeli military regarding the protection of civilian life and adherence to international law. He acknowledged Israel's right to self-defense, emphasizing that Hamas and other terrorist organizations have consistently launched attacks on Israel from within civilian infrastructure.

Condemning Hamas while supporting the Palestinian people

Cleverly asserted that it is possible to support the Palestinian people while condemning Hamas. He urged participants in pro-Palestine protests to be aware of potential manipulation, disinformation, and distortion. Cleverly acknowledged that a small minority within these protests may have negative aims and advised everyone involved to be conscious of these issues.
