Estonia Steps In
ESTONIA has offered to hold UK prisoners with our jails full to bursting.
The number of lags banged up in England and Wales this week hit a record high of 88,350.
Relief for Overcrowded Prisons
Judges have been warned not to jail low-level criminals and some prisoners are set for early release to ease overcrowding.
Estonia’s minister of justice Liisa Pakosta said the Baltic nation had cells it could rent out to Nato allies, potentially worth £25 million.
She mentioned that discussions are already underway with the UK and Sweden regarding sending prisoners to Estonia.
Rising Prison Population
The total number of people in prison in England and Wales has reached its highest point since 2011, with 88,350 individuals incarcerated as of August 30.
The prison population has been steadily rising over the past three years, with a temporary scheme in place to release 5,500 offenders early to alleviate the crisis.
Future Plans
These early releases will not include individuals convicted of serious crimes such as sex offenses, terrorism, domestic abuse, and certain violent offenses.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has pledged to build more prisons to address the growing issue of overcrowding.
