Empty Shops on High Streets to Be Seized by Councils in Time for Summer

New Powers to Revive Derelict Community Hubs

Empty shops that have been blighting English high streets will soon be seized by town halls, as ministers are set to announce new measures. Town halls will have the authority to rent out these derelict spaces, which have been vacant for over a year, in an effort to bring life back to struggling community hubs.

Auctions with No Reserve Price for Businesses and Community Groups

Auctions will be held with no reserve price, offering businesses and community groups the opportunity to secure a spot on the high street for up to five years. This move is aimed at boosting footfall in shopping strips and helping local authorities address issues such as unemployment and anti-social behavior.

Levelling Up Minister's Vision

Jacob Young, the Levelling Up Minister, expressed the goal behind these new powers, stating, "We want to bring high streets back to life and these new levelling up powers will help do just that." He emphasized the importance of a vibrant high street in fostering community spirit, creating new job opportunities, and revitalizing local areas.

Investment in High Street Regeneration

Additionally, a new programme will allocate £5 million to ten areas, including Hull and Blackpool, to introduce greenery and vitality to their high streets. Each local authority will receive £500,000 to encourage residents to return to local shops, collaborating with community organizations to develop tailored revitalization plans.
