Empty shops & offices set to be turned into housing under new plans unveiled by Michael Gove

EMPTY department stores and offices will be turned into much-needed housing under flagship plans to be unveiled by Michael Gove tomorrow.

It is hoped the change will enable hundreds of thousands more people to get a home of their own.

The Housing Secretary said: “Britain needs more homes to fulfil dreams of home ownership and increase choice for renters.

“But they must be of the right type and targeted in the right places.

“So we must build more in the places that make sense — in our inner cities so that we protect our countryside.

“And we must make better use of the buildings we already have — empty shops or offices cannot be gathering dust while we have an urgent need for more homes.

“That is why we are reviewing the rules around permitted development rights to make sure we can regenerate, build and grow.”

Highstreets have been blighted by empty shops for years after big retailers like Debenhams were hit by online trading and Covid.

Red tape will also be torn up to make it easier for homeowners to convert their lofts.

New flexibilities will allow takeaways and betting shops turn into homes.
