Britain and EU close to striking deal on Gibraltar post-Brexit

Progress in negotiations

Britain and the EU are reportedly close to reaching a deal on Gibraltar post-Brexit. Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron recently flew to Brussels for talks on the Rock’s status.

Sticking points

The UK has been pushing back against Spanish demands to station border guards at the airport, which also serves as an RAF base. Another issue has been free movement from the British Overseas Territory into the bloc.

Optimism in the air

Negotiations have been described as having a "constructive atmosphere" with "significant progress". Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo stated that they are very close to a deal, jokingly saying they are "within kissing distance" of an agreement.

Next steps

While details were not disclosed, it was mentioned that general political lines have been agreed upon, including aspects related to the airport, goods, and mobility. Negotiations will continue in the following weeks to finalize the UK-EU Agreement.
