Former PM Seeks Modernization for Country Pad
Boris Johnson, the former Tory Prime Minister, has submitted plans to knock down the servants' quarters at his £4 million mansion. Johnson aims to modernize his country home to align with the "democratic age where families no longer rely on live-in staff."
Green Light for Swimming Pool
This new application comes after Johnson was granted permission to build a swimming pool on the mansion grounds. Despite concerns from ecologist Edward Church about the impact on a newt colony, the project was approved.
Reconfiguring the Ground Floor
The application states that the southern ground floor of the property needs to be reconfigured, as it has become disjointed over several phases of alterations.
Demolition and Reconstruction
Johnson, his wife Carrie, and their three children have recently moved into the nine-bedroomed Brightwell Manor in South Oxon. They now plan to demolish and reconstruct a single-storey extension that was originally built for servants. The new design will include an enlarged boot room and extended patio.
Enhanced Security Measures
The Johnsons also want to install a gated entrance for better security. The proposal includes an electrically operated gate with a video call entry system to ensure the property is more secure, especially since there are young children living there.
New Amenities
The proposed extension will feature a new scullery, laundry, larder, breakfast room, and a "plant room," according to planning documents.
Local residents have yet to comment on the plans, and it remains to be seen whether the application will be approved.
Boris Johnson purchased the 400-year-old Brightwell Manor in February.
