Xbox gamers warned of new ‘eight-strike’ rule that could BAN players for a whole year – don’t get caught out

Xbox introduces new enforcement rules

Xbox gamers have been put on notice as Microsoft introduces a new system that could result in a year-long ban for breaking its rules. In an effort to be more transparent, the tech giant has outlined the consequences for breaching the terms and conditions of service.

Strikes mean suspensions

Under the new eight-strike system, implemented on Tuesday 15, Xbox users will face suspensions based on the number of strikes placed on their account by the Xbox safety team. Each strike, applied depending on the severity of the violation, results in a suspension of Xbox's social features.

Lengthy bans for multiple strikes

A player with two strikes will be suspended for a day, while four strikes will result in a week-long ban. However, in the most severe cases, a player will receive the maximum eight strikes, resulting in a year-long ban. This means losing access to multiplayer gaming, messaging, parties, party chat, and other social Xbox features.

Breaches and violations

Microsoft's terms and conditions cover all aspects of the Xbox console, including the Xbox Games Studio app, games, websites, Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Live Gold, Xbox Live, Xbox Music, and the Xbox Store. Violating these terms can lead to strikes and subsequent suspensions or bans. Some of the breaches include bullying and harassment, inappropriate sexual misconduct, cheating, and hate speech.

Account ban vs. console ban

If a gamer repeatedly causes trouble, their Xbox console may be blocked entirely, in addition to their account. Xbox can temporarily suspend or permanently ban consoles or other devices that have been involved in repeated and severe violations. A device suspension involves revoking certain privileges on the console, while a device ban completely blocks access to the Xbox network from that device.

No escape for problematic players

One notable aspect of the new enforcement rules is that the ban is applied to the device itself, rather than a specific Xbox profile. This prevents problematic players from simply creating new accounts to continue their behavior.

Knowing your strike count

Xbox users can keep track of their strikes and suspensions through their Enforcement History. This allows them to see how many strikes they've received and when the suspension will end. Additionally, users have the option to appeal against eligible enforcement actions.
