Union calls for strike
SAG-AFTRA, the largest union for actors in the US, has called for a strike against 10 major companies in the gaming industry after two years of contract negotiations. The main point of contention is the use of AI, which could threaten the livelihoods of voice actors.
Concerns over AI use
Voice actors fear that their voices could be added to an AI library and used in games without their consent. This issue has led to a standstill in negotiations, with some companies failing to reach an agreement in the Interactive Media Agreement renegotiations.
Companies involved and potential game delays
The companies being struck against include gaming giants like Activision, Disney, and Take 2. While many announced games have already wrapped up work with voice actors, the strike is expected to cause delays in the development of future game releases.
Union's stance
SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher emphasized the importance of fair treatment for members, stating that they will not agree to a contract that allows companies to exploit AI at their expense.
Games affected
Some of the games impacted by the strike include popular titles like Call of Duty, Fallout, Fortnite, and Grand Theft Auto. Voice actors are demanding fair compensation and the right to informed consent for the AI use of their voices, faces, and bodies.
Final thoughts
The union's National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, highlighted the significant contributions of voice actors to the gaming industry and stressed the need for them to receive the same protections as performers in other entertainment sectors.
