THE WALKING DEAD games are based on the comics written by Robert Kirkman, which were also adapted to a television series.
Here are the orders of the games, both release and timeline.
The Walking Dead games release order
First we will explain to you The Walking Dead release order.
The Walking Dead: Season 1
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One
The Walking Dead: Season 1 was the first game ever produced and released on April 24, 2012 by Telltale Games.
It consists of five different episodes: A New Day, Starved for Help, Long Road Ahead, Around Every Corner and No Time Left.
The character the player will be using is Lee Everett who joins Clementine and other survivors in Georgia to protect themselves from the zombies.

This game also had a downloadable content piece, 400 Days which prepares the player for the next game, Season 2.
The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U
The game released on March 19, 2013 by Terminal Reality, puts the player in the role of of Daryl Dixon, who can fight or sneak past walkers.
During the game he had other joining him but he must be careful how much ammo, fuel and food he carries around with him.
He can drive several vehicles, from a truck to an SUV, along the highways, minor roads and through villages.
The Walking Dead: Assault
Platforms: iOS, Android
This game was released by SkyBound on November 27, 2012.
It starts from the first comic book, in which Sherriff Rick Grimes wakes up in the hospital without having any idea how he got there.
At first, the players are taken through visits to Atlanta, the campsite and other locations before they start getting into teams of four with the characters of their choice.
The Walking Dead: Season 2
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android
This game also consists of five episodes, with the first being released on December 17, 2013 by Telltale Games.
The episodes are: All That Remains; A House Divided; In Harm’s Way; Amid the Ruins and No Going Back.
This time the players is Clementine who is collecting items and protecting herself from the apocalypse.
She has to make certain choices along the way with non-player character, which will affect the results later on in the game.
It also includes some quick time events, which if the player loses, they’ll have to restart the scene.
Some factors of the game will be determined by what the player chose to do in The Walking Dead: Season One and 400 Days.
The Walking Dead: Road to Survival
Platforms: iOS, Android
Released in April 2015, this game was developed by Scopely who then collaborated with Telltale Games to use some of their characters too.
It does not follow any particular timeline, it simply put a protagonist and some other survivors in the zombie apocalypse and they have to survive.
The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land
Platforms: iOS, Android
This is another mobile game, this time developed by Next Games, which was released on September 27, 2015 and it does not follow any timeline which relates to the comics or TV series.
The player has a group of survivors and he needs to try and keep them all alive, although not everyone will make it.
The Walking Dead: Michonne
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, iOS, Android
The first episode of this series was released on February 23, 2016 and it focuses on what Michonne was up to during the zombie apocalypse, when she separated from the rest of the group.
It is a three-episode series – developed by Telltale Games – which includes: In Too Deep; Give No Shelter and What We Deserve.
Michonne left Rick Grimes’ group and she is going through a tough time as she thinks about her two abandoned daughters, Colette and Elodie and also contemplates committing suicide.
She is stopped by the head of the boat she’s on, Pete and then she goes on to fight with the rest of the group on sail.
Michonne is one of the most admired characters in the series, and it left an even better impression on fans the fact that this series only consisted of three episodes.
The Walking Dead: A New Frontier
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android
The first two episodes of this series was released on December 20, 2016.
This is a five-episode series which consists of: Ties That Bind – Part One; Ties That Bind – Part Two; Above The Law; Thicket Than Water and From the Gallows.
This time the game’s main protagonist is Javier “Javi” Garcia, while Clem is also back as a playable character.
This game is brought up to date with the comics following the time jumps between season two and season three.
The Walking Dead: The Final Season
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
This was the final game of The Walking Games series and the first episode came out on August 14, 2018.
The first two episodes were developed by Telltale Games and the other two were done by Skybound.
It had four episodes produced: Done Running; Suffer the Children; Broken Toys and Take Us Back.
The Walking Dead: Overkill’s The Walking Dead
Platforms: PC
Released on November 6, 2018, this game was developed by Overkill Software.
It presents four characters – Maya, Aidan, Grant and Heather – who all have different skills and abilities and they need to work together to survive the post-apocalyptic Washington, D.C.
It does not follow a specific timeline from the comic or TV series.
The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners
Platforms: PC
This was released on January 23, 2020, and it gives the player is this time called a Tourist that can kill walker by attacking their brain.
The player can decide whether they want to play in a male or female character.
This is another game which doesn’t follow any particular timeline, but it gives the player a good sensation of The Walking Dead comics and TV series.
The Walking Dead: Onslaught
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4
This game was released on September 29, 2020 and it gives a portrayal of the TV show’s characters and locations.
It is said that this edition lack the scares and thrills that other games had, but it still highly rated because of the performances from the actual characters.

You can play The Walking Dead games either by comic book timeline order or by the TV Series timeline order.
