Online Storefronts Bring Uncertainty to Game Ownership

In today's digital world, the days of purchasing a game and having it for life are long gone. With the rise of online storefronts, games can be removed from platforms, leaving players without access to their favorite titles.

Gran Turismo Sport No Longer Available for Purchase

PlayStation users were taken by surprise when the popular exclusive game, Gran Turismo Sport, was suddenly removed from the PlayStation Store. Released in 2017 for the PlayStation 4, the game was a hit among racing fans. However, it has since been succeeded by Gran Turismo 7 in 2022.

Online Play and Purchasable Add-Ons Discontinued

In September, the game's developers announced that online play for Gran Turismo Sport would be discontinued on January 31, 2024. Additionally, the distribution of purchasable add-on items from the PlayStation Store would end on December 1, 2023. This means that players will no longer be able to access features such as the Community, Open Lobby, and Sport Mode, as well as custom liveries.

Game Removed from Sale, Physical Copies Only

While the deadline for purchasing DLC and add-ons has passed, many players were caught off guard by the news that the game itself would be removed from sale. PlayStation users can no longer purchase Gran Turismo Sport digitally and will need to find a physical copy if they wish to play.

Still Some Functionality Available

Although the online features will no longer be accessible, players who own a physical copy of Gran Turismo Sport can still enjoy many of the game modes. Time trials, racing against NPCs, and local co-op are still available options for those who want to continue playing.
