Nintendo fans left disappointed as popular feature disappears earlier than expected

Online features for Nintendo's 3DS and Wii U no longer working

Nintendo fans were taken by surprise when they discovered that online features for the 3DS and Wii U were no longer functioning, months before the scheduled shutdown in 2024. Players have reported issues with downloading new Mario Maker levels and have encountered error codes indicating that the game can no longer synchronize with the server.

End of an era for 3DS and Wii U

In 2023, Nintendo made the announcement that online play and other functionalities would be discontinued for the 3DS and Wii U in early April 2024. This means that any feature reliant on online communication will cease to work. However, while single-player games will still be playable, online multiplayer and other online features will no longer be available.

Unanticipated issues

Although fans initially believed that Nintendo had decided to sunset online services early, the company has clarified that the current issues are unintentional. Nintendo has assured users that they are working to resolve the problems with the legacy servers and that fixes have already been implemented for some affected games. While it remains unclear if every affected game will be fixed, Nintendo still plans to retire the services in April, giving players a few more months to enjoy them.
