Unicorn Overlord: A Unique Twist on RPGs
I’ve played all of the big RPGs this year, but one with a twist has me hooked. 2021 kicked off with several excellent RPGs, including Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Persona 3 Reload, and Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, all of which have already achieved success. However, when Unicorn Overlord launched for PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, I knew I had to dive in once more.

Developed by Vanillaware, known for games like 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and Dragon’s Crown, Unicorn Overlord offers a unique twist on RPGs. With a gorgeous art style, the game focuses more on strategy, where you build an army to take on enemy forces. With over 60 characters to recruit, each belonging to different classes, players must create diverse units for success.
Complex Classes and Leader Dynamics
Each class in Unicorn Overlord has its strengths and weaknesses, adding layers of complexity to gameplay. The leader of each unit plays a crucial role, with abilities like flying across terrain, gaining power at night, or providing support from a distance. Despite the intricate systems, the game offers tools like auto-equip and difficulty settings for new players.
Refreshing Gameplay and Bite-Sized Quests
The strategy in Unicorn Overlord occurs outside of battles, allowing players to set up their army for success. With bite-sized battles and side quests in the overworld, the game offers a refreshing take on RPGs. Despite the complexity, Unicorn Overlord manages to keep players engaged with its exciting gameplay and post-game content.

While many may feel overwhelmed by the plethora of excellent games released this year, Unicorn Overlord stands out as a unique and engaging RPG experience. If you’re looking for something different in the RPG genre, Unicorn Overlord is definitely worth a try.
