When we think of esports events, we often focus on the players and the intense competition. But what about the thousands of people working behind the scenes to make it all happen? At the recent IEM Katowice tournament, we had the opportunity to go backstage and were blown away by the sheer scale of the operation.
An Esports Production on a Grand Scale
Esports events like IEM Katowice rival traditional sports in terms of organization and manpower. With over 4.5k people working tirelessly to bring the tournament to life, the level of complexity and coordination is truly astounding. From technical crews to production teams, these professionals ensure that every aspect of the event runs smoothly.
But what sets esports apart from traditional sports is the unique challenge of showcasing gameplay. In battle royale games, for example, there can be up to 100 players competing simultaneously. This means the production teams must find innovative ways to capture and display multiple perspectives, far surpassing the complexity of traditional sports.
A Sneak Peek Behind the Curtain
Our visit to the IEM Katowice tournament gave us an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the state-of-the-art ESL studios. What struck us the most was the sheer size of the facility. Spanning an area larger than a football pitch, the studio is meticulously designed to accommodate different game setups and production needs.
Inside, we discovered a variety of setups, each tailored to enhance the viewing experience for fans. Some areas feature green screens, allowing for immersive graphics and analysis. Others boast cutting-edge LED screens on the floor, creating a visually stunning backdrop with dynamic animations.
The Future of Esports
With a record-breaking peak viewership of 1.2 million people tuning in simultaneously, it's clear that esports is not just a passing trend but a thriving industry. The world of competitive gaming has solidified its place alongside traditional sports, captivating audiences from all corners of the globe.
