Fortnite celebrates MLK with March Through Time interactive experience

EPIC Games has just announced a new Fortnite interactive experience that will give players the opportunity to visit an in-game Washington D.C. for Dr. King’s historic speech.

Teaming up TIME Studios, March Through Time is described as an “interactive and educational experience to celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”

Is it a bit weird at first glance? Good lord, yes. But it’s also a sign of the times; kids love Fortnite and it’s blossomed from a video game into a virtual social space.

It’s played host to more frivolous content like concerts, so while it seems a bit jarring to have such a momentous, historic event dropped into Fortnite Creative mode, it’s a guaranteed way to introduce and educate a new audience to Dr. King’s work, life, and mission.

The project is an evolution of TIME Studios’ VR project, The March, which brought Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s ‘I have a dream’ speech to the platform.

“TIME Studios’ mission is to embrace innovative new formats to tell the world’s most impactful stories,” explains president of TIME Studios, Ian Orefice.

“We are thrilled to introduce our first-ever gaming experience and expand our groundbreaking The March project, which started as an immersive exhibit, into the global, educational event March Through Time in Fortnite Creative.”

March Through Time will let players “explore Dr. King’s historic impact in a new way” and includes:

  • Museum-inspired points of interest and historical imagery contextualizing Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech
  • Collaborative quests where players must work together to complete various mini-games
  • Pop-up galleries and educational resources

Completing the quests moves players through the experience, and will “bring to life important themes of Dr. King’s speech: we move forward when we work together.”

Fortnite players will be dropped into D.C. 63 – a “reimagined” Washington D.C – and visit the Lincoln Memorial, and United Stated National Mall where the speech took place.
