European consumer organisation files complaint against gaming companies for deceptive practices

BEUC takes a stand

BEUC has filed a complaint with the European Commission, calling out gaming companies for what it deems as "deceptive practices." The 36-page filing names popular games like Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft, and Clash of Clans, along with companies like Activision Blizzard, EA, and Ubisoft.

Deceptive tactics under scrutiny

The complaint highlights "manipulative tactics" used in games involving premium in-game currencies, especially targeting children. It suggests that these practices do not comply with EU consumer rules and fail to provide a safe online environment.

Calls for improvement

BEUC and its member organisations from 17 EU countries outline areas for improvement in games to align with EU law. They point out issues like unclear pricing of digital items, lack of refund options, and vulnerability of children to manipulative tactics.

Protecting consumers

The filing advocates for turning off in-game purchases and microtransactions by default, giving parents more control over their children's spending. It aims to make the choice of purchasing in-game items a conscious decision for users.
