Disney fans outraged as latest release reneges on promise of free-to-play

A recent Disney release has sparked anger among fans after the company went back on its word. What was originally advertised as a free-to-play game now comes with a premium price tag, leaving fans divided.

The promise and the reality

In April 2022, Disney announced the release of Disney Dreamlight Valley, a free-to-play game where players can explore a Disneyland-like town with their favorite Disney characters. The game was released in early access in September 2022, but players were required to pay for this early access.

The cost of the game ranged from £24 for the basic version to £58 for the ultimate edition, which included additional in-game items. However, players were under the impression that this price was for the year of early access and in-game extras, and that the game would eventually become free-to-play.

A change of plans

Disney recently announced that when Disney Dreamlight Valley exits early access on December 5, it will continue to be a paid game. This decision has left players disappointed, as they were expecting a free-to-play experience. The game is already filled with microtransactions, timers, and limitations typically found in free-to-play games, leading many players to question the justification for the premium price tag.

Disney stated, "This choice ensures that Disney Dreamlight Valley will be able to continue delivering on a premium game experience for all players." However, the majority of players do not feel that the game lives up to the promise of a "premium" experience.

Disney fans are expressing their frustration and disappointment with the company's decision, feeling misled by the initial promise of a free-to-play game. The controversy surrounding Disney Dreamlight Valley serves as a reminder that companies should strive to deliver on their promises and manage customer expectations.
