World-renowned horror game franchise makes a shocking comeback after a decade
After a long ten-year wait, fans of one of the most famous horror game franchises in the world are in for a treat. In a surprising move, Konami has made not one but two exciting announcements. What's more, the latest entry in the franchise is available today completely free on PS5.
A long-awaited return for Silent Hill
Silent Hill, a beloved hit from the noughties with multiple games and even two movies, has left fans eagerly anticipating a new installment since the release of the ill-fated P.T. demo in 2014. Unfortunately, the demo was abruptly removed after the cancellation of the planned Silent Hills title. Apart from last year's interactive streaming series Silent Hill: Ascension, there hasn't been much news from the franchise. The demand for more Silent Hill is so high that PS4 consoles with the P.T. demo installed can fetch prices of around £500.
Free and contemporary
In a surprising move, Konami has released the new game, titled Silent Hill: The Short Message, for free. This is an excellent opportunity for those who have never played a Silent Hill game before to get a taste of what the franchise is all about. The game follows protagonist Anita, whose sense of reality is shattered by a series of bizarre and otherworldly spaces, as well as a twisted monster. Konami aimed to create a new and modern Silent Hill, incorporating contemporary problems. The game explores the dark side of modern youth's online communication and the psychological horror that can arise from it. The overwhelming wave of hate that can be generated from insignificant individual comments on social media served as inspiration for the game's chilling atmosphere.
Early reception
Gamers wasted no time in rushing to download the new title, and early reviews suggest that it lasts around an hour and a half. Players have described the game as emotionally impactful and have praised its deep message. Many have also made reference to the P.T. fiasco, urging others not to delete this new game from their hard drives.
Remake of Silent Hill 2
During the PlayStation State of Play event, it was also revealed that Silent Hill 2 is getting a remake for the PS5. The combat will be "improved and modernized" for this version. Silent Hill 2 was originally released in 2001, but there is currently no release date for the remake.
