Controversy Surrounding Top Free-to-Play Steam Games

Developers Under Fire for Pushing Positive Reviews

Free-to-play gamers were in for a treat with the launch of two major games earlier this month. The First Descendant impressed fans with its stunning graphics but faced backlash for its expensive microtransactions and pay-to-win elements. On the other hand, Once Human, an open-world survival crafting game, saw massive success but received negative reviews due to game-breaking updates.

Player Backlash and Developer Response

Following an update on July 18 that caused players' bases to be destroyed and items to disappear, Starry Studio, the team behind Once Human, promised to address the issues promptly. Despite their attempts to rectify the situation, negative reviews flooded the game's Steam page. Reports surfaced that the developer allegedly encouraged positive reviews on the game's Discord server, a violation of Steam's Terms of Service prohibiting artificial manipulation of user reviews.

Controversy Continues

Although the call to action for positive reviews was swiftly deleted, questions remain about potential breaches of terms of service. Reviews on the game have since stabilized, with an overall 'Mostly Positive' rating on Steam. The incident raises concerns about the integrity of user reviews and the influence of developers on game ratings.
