Children's Christmas Wishes: Less Toys, More Video Games

Rethinking Christmas

The holiday season is fast approaching, and it seems that children have a different idea of what they want under the tree this year. Instead of eagerly unwrapping presents, more and more kids are asking for video game-related gifts. This shift in preferences is shaking up traditional Christmas celebrations.

Virtual Currency Takes Center Stage

Kids are no longer interested in just consoles and physical games. According to a study by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), a whopping 72% of children want video game-related presents this Christmas. However, it's not the typical games and consoles they're after. Instead, they're requesting in-game currencies like Fortnite V-Bucks or Roblox Robux, as well as subscriptions to their favorite online games.

The Rise of Digital Games

The trend towards digital gaming is on the rise, with studies showing that up to 90% of games purchased are now digital downloads. This shift is reflected in children's wish lists, as 39% of them are asking for video game subscriptions and 29% want in-game currency. While physical games still make up a small portion of the requests at 22%, the popularity of live-service games continues to grow year after year.

Gift Cards: The Ultimate Choice

Not only are children asking for virtual gaming goods, but they also prefer to receive gift cards instead of traditional presents. A staggering 70% of children surveyed expressed their desire for gift cards, allowing them to choose their own gaming experiences. It seems that children value the freedom of choice and the thrill of exploring the gaming realm on their own terms.

Parents' Response

Parents are taking note of their children's changing preferences. In fact, 57% of parents plan to purchase video game-related gifts for their kids this Christmas. On average, parents expect to spend a significant $500 on these presents, showing their willingness to embrace their children's evolving interests.
