Unstoppable Domains (UD) has introduced a new messaging system for owners of Web3 usernames, enabling them to communicate with each other across various apps. The messaging integration, which uses the extensible message transport protocol (XMTP) for encryption, is now available on the UD iOS app, Coinbase Wallet, and Lens protocol apps including Lenster and Buttrfly. Android users will have access to this feature soon, according to the announcement.

Ensuring Accessibility and Data Preservation

The messaging system is designed to ensure that messages sent via UD will still be accessible even if the company ceases operations in the future. The XMTP protocol enables full encryption and secure message transmission. "Your messages will be preserved and accessible to you no matter what happens to Unstoppable," the announcement stated.

Expanding the Utility of Web3 Usernames

Web3 usernames, which have been in use since 2017, enable crypto users to associate their long strings of account addresses with easy-to-remember names. While these usernames have primarily been used for receiving payments, there is now an effort to expand their utility to include applications such as messaging. Coinbase Wallet, for example, launched an instant messaging system that allows users to communicate with each other using their .eth or .cb.id usernames. This feature was also integrated with the social media protocol Lens, which relies on XMTP.

Breaking Down Barriers

Previously, usernames registered through Unstoppable Domains, such as those ending in .crypto or .polygon, could not communicate with usernames from other platforms. However, this issue has now been resolved. Lens app and Coinbase Wallet users can now send messages to each other using their Unstoppable Domains usernames, as well as other methods.

Future Developments

Unstoppable Domains has announced that it will soon integrate with Push Protocol, allowing username owners to receive notifications from Web3 projects. This will enable projects to message users through the Unstoppable Domains website or app.

Expanding Collaborations and Alliances

In addition to the messaging system launch, Unstoppable Domains has partnered with Binance.US, allowing users to register usernames ending in .BinanceUS. Furthermore, the company has reached an agreement with rival Ethereum Name Service (ENS), enabling ENS .eth names to be sold in the UD store for the first time.
