The United Kingdom (U.K.) is set to host the world's first international summit on artificial intelligence (AI) safety in November 2023. This event aims to position the U.K. as a mediator between the United States, China, and the European Union in the post-Brexit era.

The summit, scheduled for November 1-2, will focus on the potential existential threat posed by AI, a concern shared by lawmakers around the world. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who envisions the U.K. as a hub for AI safety, has expressed apprehensions about the misuse of AI by criminals and terrorists for the development of weapons of mass destruction.

A Gathering of Visionaries and Legislators

About 100 attendees, including U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, will join Prime Minister Sunak at Bletchley Park for the summit. The event will bring together legislators, AI experts, and scholars to discuss global AI regulation and the risks associated with the rapid advancement of technology.

Collaboration with Democratic Allies

A group of influential members of parliament (MPs) in the U.K. has urged the government to work with democratic allies to address the potential misuse of AI. This highlights London's ambition to play a key role in advancing emerging technologies.

Economic Boost and Investment in AI

Following the announcement of the summit, Google released an analysis suggesting that increased investment in AI could contribute £400 billion ($488 billion) to Britain's economy by 2030. Additionally, OpenAI announced plans to open its first office outside of the U.S. in London, further emphasizing the U.K.'s significance in the AI landscape.

In August 2023, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pledged £100 million ($130 million) to purchase thousands of computer chips to support AI development. This investment comes amid a global shortage and a race for computing power, demonstrating the U.K.'s commitment to embracing the potential of AI.
