Identification and Bounty
Crypto exchange Poloniex has announced that it has identified the hacker responsible for stealing over $100 million in digital assets from one of its wallets. In a message posted on the blockchain, the exchange has offered the hacker a chance to return the stolen assets in exchange for a $10 million bounty.
Collaboration with Law Enforcement
Poloniex has revealed that it is working closely with law enforcement agencies from the United States, Russia, and China to address the incident. The exchange has already marked the stolen funds, making it impossible for the hacker to use them.
Deadline and Consequences
The exchange has set a deadline of November 25 for the hacker to return the stolen funds. If the assets are not returned by that date, police forces will take action.
Skepticism within the Community
Despite Poloniex's claim of identifying the hacker, some community members remain unconvinced. They argue that involving multiple law enforcement agencies and sending messages in multiple languages suggests that the hacker's identity is still uncertain.
The Hack and Response
The hack took place earlier this month when a Poloniex crypto wallet experienced suspicious outflows. Blockchain security firms determined that more than $100 million had been drained from the wallet. In response, Poloniex disabled the wallet for maintenance and enlisted the help of a security auditing firm to enhance the exchange's security. The exchange also offered a 5% bounty for the return of the stolen funds.
